Bringing a Companion to a Family Function: An Honest Guide
Tired of relatives asking when you will settle down? How to bring a verified, platonic companion to a family function or wedding, and keep it simple and respectful.
Every Indian family function has the moment: an aunt, a plate of snacks, and "so, kab is it happening?". Some people handle it with a joke. Others would rather walk in with someone beside them. If you are considering bringing a companion, here is how to do it without stress.
Is this a normal thing to do?
More than you would think. Bringing a friend to a function is completely ordinary; bringing a verified companion is the same thing with less scheduling. What matters is that it is platonic, respectful and simple.
Keep the story short
The most common mistake is an elaborate backstory. Relatives ask follow-up questions, and details trip people up. Agree on one line: "a friend from work" or "we met through friends in Gurugram". Short, true-sounding, and hard to contradict.
Think carefully before presenting a companion as a partner to close family. It can create expectations you will have to unwind later. "A good friend" is usually enough to stop the questions.
Brief your companion properly
- Who will be there, and one or two people to be friendly with.
- Any topics to avoid: politics, your job, your ex.
- The dress code and how formal the event is.
- How long you will stay. Two to three hours is plenty for a first time.
- Photo boundaries: agree whether it is fine to be in family photos.
Respect goes both ways
A companion is a person doing you a kindness, paid or not. Arrange your own transport, do not ask them to stay beyond what you agreed, and never expect anything physical. On SaathWala, companions can decline any request, and anyone who pushes boundaries is removed.
